"Larawang Likha, Handog sa Kapwa": Zone V Camera Club goes beyond creativity, blending love of art with charitable advocacy

Tuesday, October 25

Since its founding in 1978, Zone Five Camera Club (ZVCC), a guild of aesthetes who share a love for photography, has become one of the most renowned fine art photography clubs in the country today.

Having gained recognition at local and international photography competitions, its membership has combined their passion for photography as an art form equally with a passion for creating a difference in people’s lives.

For years, ZVCC has been holding exhibits and fund-raising activities to support the advancement of the education of underprivileged students at an annual charity-event fittingly called: Images of H.O.P.E.(HELPING OTHERS PROSPER & EXCEL).

In 2021, the charity-event’s beneficiaries were scholars from the Assumption Development Foundation (ADF), a non-profit organization dedicated to the learning development of select youths at Sapang Palay, Bulacan.

Despite COVID-19 constraints, ZVCC was able to pivot and hold the event online. It was a first in the guild’s storied history.

But it is not without irony that Images of H.O.P.E.’s seamless transition into the virtual space was in stark contrast to the plight of many ADF students.

Schooling for the underprivileged was disproportionately impaired during the pandemic.

“This is not only because of an absence of a reliable internet connection in their homes, but more importantly because of the un-likelihood of them owning laptops and computers,” said ZVCC Vice President Angela Panlilio. “Both are obvious staples in the shift to distance learning.”

Perhaps as an unbearable coup de grace, the cramped quarters and raucous environs typical of indigent neighborhoods do not at all facilitate proper studying.

It is to this end that, through Images of H.O.P.E., ZVCC was able to raise funds to buy computers for ADF scholars; and, in partnership with PLDT/Smart’s fiber connectivity, build The Learning Hub.

A fully-functioning digital learning center equipped with 10 desktop computers and 600 Mbps of internet speed, The Hub addressed ADF scholar’s needs for finding an environment conducive to studies.

For 4th year college scholar, Miranella stayed at The Hub for three months as a “refuge to survive online classes,” somewhere to concentrate and deeply focus on her lessons. The set-up allowed the engineering student to “host a webinar efficiently” and eventually finish her thesis paper.

Clucking chickens and chattering neighbors were Jasmine’s interruptions at home. On her 2nd year of taking Office Administration, the non-stop commotion made it hard for her to work on school projects. But The Hub was “a peaceful place for people who are easily distracted by noise.”

Still, to some, The Hub even became a place they could call “home.”

To solve her internship struggles, Queenie, a student finishing Business Administration, stayed at the ADF not just for a few weeks but for an entire semester. Quicker access to The Hub made doing research and interviews for her digital project much easier to complete. And as a result, she graduated last September with the award of “Best Intern.”

Following the 2021 success of Images of H.O.P.E., ZVCC is again holding an online photography print sale featuring some of its best works from October 23-31 at www.zonev.org with the theme: “Larawang Likha, Handog sa Kapwa.”

“This year, we have chosen our charity-event to benefit Educational Research Development Assistance (ERDA) SaBaNa (for SAnayan ng mga BAtang NAnambakan – which translates to Training Center for Child Scavengers),” said ZVCC Special Projects Head Ruben Castor Ranin.

Founded in 1974 by Fr. Pierre T. Tritz, SJ (Society of Jesus), a Frenchman who renounced his citizenship to become a Filipino national, ERDA dissuades Filipino children from dropping out of school.

The ERDA Foundation helps underprivileged students in Radial Road 10, Tondo, Manila through the continued support of partners, volunteers, and generous benefactors such as ZVCC.

“ERDA has already assisted more than 800,000 children in their education, and Zone V is hopeful that we can help more,” said ZVCC President Bern Wong. “But of course we need the public’s support, and so we invite our friends, art collectors, and photography buffs to please visit www.zonev.org from October 23 to 21 and join us in this year’s Images of H.O.P.E.”

“With your patronage, together we can blend our passion for works of art with a passion for worthy causes,” Wong closed.

Sunpiology Resolution Run 2018 Hits The 5 Million Mark

Tuesday, January 30

Sunpiology Resolution Run

Sun Life Financial Philippines welcomed 2018 by rallying Filipinos towards health and wellness with its annual fun run, the Sunpiology Resolution Run, and has raised over 5 million for charity.

More than 3,000 runners joined the event last January 20, 2018 at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City. Seasoned runners and first timers tackled obstacles designed to raise awareness about diabetes. A limbo rock challenge reminded everyone to keep their health in check, a 100-step challenge gave reminders on how to infuse exercise in one’s daily routine, while a sugar tunnel prompted everyone to watch their sugar intake.

Sun Life has been championing diabetes awareness since 2015, after studies that it commissioned showed that many Filipinos lacked knowledge about the debilitating disease. In fact, part of the funds raised will go to the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation (ISDFI), which facilitates diabetes awareness and prevention initiatives for Filipinos.

Other beneficiaries are Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation, Hebreo Foundation, and the Star Magic scholars.

Now on its 9th year, the run was once again co-presented by Star Magic and led by actor and Sun Life brand ambassador Piolo Pascual. His fellow artists, such as Matteo Guidicelli, Enchong Dee, Robi Domingo, Kisses Delavin, Edward Barber, and Maymay Entrata also joined the event. Other artists were Ashley Colet, Bailey May, Belle Mariano, Chantal Videla, Christian Morones, Claire Ruiz, Franco Rodriguez, Hannah Ledesma, Hannah Lopez Vito, Henz Villaraiz, Jai Agpangan, Jameson Blake, Jessica Marasigan, Joe Vargas, Joj Agpangan, Kyle Velino, Lance Lucido, Loren Burgos, Marco Gallo, Maris Racal, Mark Rivera, Mikee Agustin, Nico Antonio, Nikki Valdez, Inigo Pascual, Pamu Pamorada, Raine Salamante, Ria Atayde, Sam Shoaf, Sam Thurman, Tommy Esguerra, Vivoree Esclito, Xia Vigor,Yesha Camile, Ysabel Ortega, Zeus Collins and Zonia Mejia.

The Resolution Run was presented by Sun Life Financial Philippines in partnership with Brooks, Cherifer, Diabetasol, DMC Marketing Services, Dr. Kong, Fitbar, Gardenia, Green Stevia, Hi-Precision Diagnostics, Mega Sardines, RUNNR, Saucony, Stable, Sun Life Grepa Financial, Inc., and TrueTea; supported by Glorious Blend, Nurture Wellness Village, PhilRice, and Silka; with media partners Business Mirror, Business World, Cinema One, Lifestyle, OUTCOMM, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, and Star Studio. Gatorade (official hydration partner), (My Health Clinic (official medical partner), Garmin (official timer); and Toby’s (official registration partner) also helped mount the event facilitated by RunRio.

The event completes Sunpiology Duo, Sun Life's bike-run event, which commenced last November 2017 with the Sun Life Cycle PH.

Help Save Baby Kelsey Alagon

Thursday, December 21

Update:

Baby Kelsey has gained her wings on January 12, 2018 while she was confined at the Philippine Heart Center. The family will forever be grateful to those who have extended financial assistance. Please pray for baby Kelsey.

=====

My cousin Katrina Carlos-Alagon and her husband Bryan Alagon are expecting their 3rd baby this December 2017. It is an exciting addition to the family and we are all very happy to welcome the new baby girl. Katrina and Bryan are blessed with two children, Khalil and Keira.

An unexpected trial came to the family when Katrina found out that the new baby has Multiple Congenital Anomalies after undergoing a series of medical tests on one of her regular visits to her OB. The tests revealed that the baby has hypoplastic heart syndrome, underdeveloped lungs, stomach bubble, and cleft lip and cleft palate.

Katrina is advised by her doctor to have an emergency Caesarian procedure to avoid any more complications to the baby’s delicate heart condition. An ambulance will then bring the baby to the Philippine Heart Center to undergo immediate heart operation.

The doctors are positive that the baby will have a chance to live since the Philippines is already equipped with state-of-the-art technology. However, the procedure will cost them P2,000,000 (US$40,000).

Although the couple are both employed, Kat’s mom recently suffered a stroke and Bryan’s mom recently won the fight against the Big C. They are financially struggling right now.

You've helped me before during the fundraising campaign of my nephew Baby Bien's Liver Transplant in 2012 and we are forever grateful. I am knocking on your kind and generous hearts once again as we are faced with another mission to save a baby's life.

If you wish to extend financial help, you can deposit directly to the account of the baby's mom

Account Name: Katrina Mae Carlos
Bank: BPI Savings Account 2486131569

You can also send your donation through my PayPal account roselle.c.toledo@gmail.com

Please indicate in the PayPal note that it's for "Baby Kelsey Alagon Fundraising". Thank you very much.

A Mother's Plead: Wanted Liver Donor for Ndrei

Monday, July 11

I was at The Medical City Ortigas this morning when I saw a familiar face at the taxi bay. I stared at her for a few more seconds just to make sure. It was Ndrei's mom who I bumped into. The last time I saw her was two years ago during the Biliary Atresia Pre and Post Transplant Patients Christmas Party. Ndrei was on a wheelchair back then. But this kid is a fighter.

I am religiously following his facebook account https://www.facebook.com/livertransplant4Ndrei/  and I've seen how he has been fighting for dear life. His mom is also not giving up. Drawing strength from her beloved Ndrei, she was able to raise the needed funds. But there is a bigger problem. There is no available liver donor for Ndrei.

He was hospitalized already in Davao and was in critical condition before they flew to Manila. The need for liver transplant is urgent.

Here's a screen capture from Ndrei's fundraising Facebook page:

If you know someone who is willing to be an organ donor for Ndrei, please get in touch with Rubi at 0905.497.3654 or 0999.543.9981 They are also accepting any help you can extend. Ndrei has been confined in Medical City Ortigas since June 27, 2016.

I felt so helpless this morning. The only thing I could do was hug Rubi and somehow give her the assurance that Ndrei will find a donor soon.

Please include Ndrei in your prayers. It will also be a big help if you could SHARE this article and hopefully through this Ndrei will find a liver donor.

A Mom's Letter: Support Ayesha's Liver Transplant

Thursday, March 10

Shaina Ayesha Ramos Nieves was born on April 28, 2014 with twin sister, in Quezon City, Philippines. Ayesha and her twin Brianna was born below weight birth. During their growth days Ayesha’s growth development was a lot different from her twin sister. We noticed also her yellowish skin complexion and we informed her pediatric doctor about it. The medical term referred to as “Jaundice”. On her 11th weeks she was confined in the hospital to rule out the cause of the “jaundice”. A month of confinement in the hospital she was diagnosed with a rare life-threatening disease known as “BILIARY ATRESIA.” Biliary atresia, is a rare disease and only affects about one out of every 18,000 infants. And liver transplantation is one definite treatment for biliary atresia. Just 6 days after the result, she underwent an operation called “Kasai Procedure,” the first treatment for the illness. The only thing we can do is trust God for His Divine Mercy, we prayed that the procedure becomes successful and that she’ll regain good health. The operation went well in the 3 months period. On November 2014 the result of her laboratories was not good. Her liver is getting bigger, her heart was affected, and she had blood transfusion.

The doctor's advice was the immediate need of “Liver Transplant” the soonest possible.

Again, we Trust in the Lord’s Divine Grace and Mercy, that holds our Faith, Trust and Love to the Baby Ayesha, but our family do not have financial capability for the cost of the operation, ranging from 3 to 4 Million Pesos (89,760.00 USD)

Our Baby Ayesha is a strong and joyful baby, even though she’s suffering pain for this kind of disease. She’s still fighting for her life. And we will do our very best to help the baby.

With this, our family humbly asks for your benevolent deeds, and help to raise the funds needed for the operation. Uphold us in prayers in this time of trials, and thank you for those who are praying with us. We know that God will provide the need.

Sincerely,

Mary Jane Ramos Nieves

Celebrate with Songs of Hope: A Christmas Fundraising Concert for Breast Cancer Awareness

Monday, November 16

I lost my mom to breast cancer. It was a long battle that has made us emotionally and financially drained. She was on remission for 8 years. We all thought she was completely healed. And then on November 2009, the cancer returned. Eight months later, she gained her wings.

Breast Cancer is a disease which can affect men, women and children, and can be fatal if not detected or treated at its early stages. The fact is that 3 out of 10 women who live in the Philippines are suffering from Breast Cancer. This means that 30% of the entire female population in the country has this health ailment.

Advanced medical treatments are making it easier for more patients to survive Breast Cancer, but these methods are quite expensive. Because of this, most people cannot afford the procedure. External factors like the present economic state of the nation, the issue of inflation and taxes, or that they are either unemployed or are working for minimum wage or less are not helping things either. It is heartbreaking to know that many individuals choose to ignore Breast Cancer because they would rather use whatever money they have to feed their families or pay the bills.

Lyric Opera of the Philippines and the Resorts World Manila is organizing a special campaign for this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness. “Celebrate with Songs of Hope: A Christmas Fundraising Concert” will be held at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila on December 16, 2015. The event will start at 7:30pm as part of an ongoing campaign to fight Breast Cancer, a disease that has claimed thousands of lives over the years. The organizers aim to educate people about the symptoms of Breast Cancer, and what they can do to survive it.

Each ticket you buy will send one Breast Cancer patient to much needed Chemotherapy Treatment.

You will be treated to a night of song and music courtesy of the conductor Chino Toledo and the Grupo 20/21 Orchestra. Artists who are expected to perform at the concert are Jose Mari Chan, Anna Feleo, Noel Azcona, Randy Gilongo, Sherwin Sozon, Franco and Ayen Laurel, John Glenn Gaerlan, Jane Wee, Andrea Melisa Camba, Stephanie Aguilar, Dave de Jesus, David Cicero Pado, Raymond Muyot, Nomher Nival, Mary Patrice Pacis, Naomi Sison and Marie Antonette Pascual.

The ticket prices are as follows:

SVIP -        PhP 3,000
VIP-           PhP 2,800
GOLD -      PhP 2,500
SILVER -   PhP 2,200
BRONZE - PhP 2,000

Pintig Puso Foundation: Art For A Cause

Monday, September 21

Do you have an artwork (digital art, painting, sketch) that you are willing to sell for a cause?  You can name your price and once sold, all the proceeds will be donated to Pintig Puso Foundation of the Philippine Heart Center.

For more information, please get in touch with Avie at (63) 906.207.8877

About Pintig Puso Foundation

The Philippine Heart Center (PHC) Pintig Puso Foundation came into being as a response to seeing indigent in-patients of the Adult Cardiology Division with symptomatic bradycardia (dangerously “slow heart rates”) restrained to bed for weeks or months because of temporary transvenous pacemakers placed through the groin causing undue protracted hospitalizations simply because they could not afford to buy the life-saving permanent cardiac pacemakers that they need. This was in July of 2002. The PHC Pintig Puso Foundation, a non-stock, non-profit organization was established — a then emerging hope for this predicament. Dr. Noe Babilonia, head of the Adult Cardiology, together with eleven other incorporators, including Adult Cardiology staff members as well as hospital employees from the Finance and Social Services Division joined hearts and minds to realize this hope.

Its objective was to raise funds to help these indigent patients procure their permanent cardiac pacemakers. With meager financial capacity, the Foundation holds and mainly relies upon, up until now, on its annual Post-Graduate Scientific Courses to generate funds for the pacemaker needs of these patients. In the recent years, we’ve seen the needs grow and so we decided to include giving out other kinds of cardiovascular devices in addition to pacemakers. These patients are qualified social welfare patients who do not have means of acquiring these devices by themselves.

Years and years after its inception (we’re going on 12 this year!) and to date, a total of 68 pacemakers given out to indigent patients, the Foundation continues to reach out and help as we remain steadfast and true to our mission:

We are men and women

We enable our fellowmen to have a second chance at life

We make it simple

We love life

This we are infinitely grateful to and we make possible through the help of our annual Post-Graduate Scientific Courses’ sponsors and benefactors, and other kind-spirited institutions, companies and individuals who have helped us by way of financial or “in kind pacemaker donations”

Surely a lot more will be needing and surely, we will be scampering to help…

Everyday is an occasion to fill other people’s bucket. Help us fill that bucket…

One pacemaker at a time, we know we all can make a difference. A second chance at life.

Save Sybyl Shynn: Liver Transplant Fundraising

Thursday, July 23

This cute little girl is baby Sybyl Shynn. She is now 13 months old. I first met her last December 2014 at a Christmas Party of Biliary Atresia Babies. She looks healthy back then but her eyes are yellowish. She is suffering from a rare chronic liver disease.

Don't be deceived by her chubby cheeks. She is underweight for her age. She has skinny arms and legs, dark yellow skin and a big tummy. She needs to undergo liver transplantation the soonest time possible but the procedure will cost P4,000,000.  Her parents has been raising funds by selling pre-loved clothes, cookies and fundraising shirts. It was sad when someone even accused Lav (Sybyl's mom) that the fundraising is a scam when she asked for help in instagram.

If you wish to help, in any way, please get in touch with Lav.

Bilang isang Ina.. He is baby Ace Jirouxian Isirani. He was born last March 20, 2013. He lives in Commonwealth, Quezon City. I met him yesterday at the Christmas Party of Biliary Atresia Babies and Ahon Pamilyang Lansangan Foundation.

The result of his upper abdomen ultrasound revealed some abnormalities with his liver. His eyes are yellowish and his stomach is already swelling. He has not undergone biopsy yet  due to low platelets count.

He is prescribed with various medicines for maintenance until such time that his condition improves in order for him to undergo liver biopsy.

Please help support his fundraising for his liver transplantation. Any amount will definitely help him win this battle.

Peninsula in Pink

Thursday, November 6

The Peninsula Manila joins its sister hotels in Asia, North America and Europe once again in showing support for the Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout October with "Peninsula in Pink" (Peninsula En Rose), a group-wide campaign to raise awareness and funds through select pink-themed offers.

A percentage of this year's proceeds goes directly to improving and upgrading the facilities of East Avenue Medical Center's Breast Care Center together with its chosen beneficiary, Philippine Foundation for Breast Care, Inc.

Blame memory gap or maybe because this drink is so luscious that I forgot the name. This one has raspberry.

The Peninsula in Pink pin can be bought for P250. Help raise awareness by purchasing and wearing this pin.
My drink came with a free pin. Yey!

My mom and auntie had a brave, long fight against breast cancer that is why Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign is very close to my heart. I'm glad that their campaign went beyond the month of October and I was able to take part in it.

Liver Transplant Fundraising: Help Save Sabine's Life

Wednesday, June 25

There is not much awareness about Biliary Atresia in the Philippines. Surprisingly, there are many babies in our country who need to undergo liver transplant in order to live. Most of them fly to Taiwan because of the affordability of the operation and the high success rate.

Another baby is in need of your help. Sabine's parents need to raise around four to five million pesos ($120,000). The soonest the procedure is performed, the higher the chance for Sabine to live. She may suffer from complications the longer the delay.

If you have any amount to spare, please find in your heart to help this charming little girl.

For more information, visit Sabine's Facebook Page.

Please help us spread this fundraising campaign by sharing this blog's link or her facebook page.

Thank you.
